Habitual lying or affecting your health wants to make your body healthier. What should you pay attention to besides healthy eating and exercise?
A US study shows that less lying is equally beneficial to human health.
This is exactly what it is called: “The gentleman is frank, the villain is long!”
Honest Experiments Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana recruited 110 volunteers to participate in a 10-week honest experiment.
Volunteers ranged in age from 18 to 71 years old, 34% were community residents, 66% were college students, belonged to different races; and the family had the lowest annual income.
$50,000, the highest is more than $160,000.
The researchers divided the volunteers into honesty and comparison groups, and asked the honest group to “unconditionally eliminate lies, choose to skip the truth, not answer questions or keep secrets” during the experiment, and the comparison group did not.
Anita Kelly, a professor of psychology at the head of the experiment, said: “There are recent data showing that Americans lie an average of 11 times a week.
We want to see if living more honestly is indeed healthy.
During the study period, volunteers received a weekly physical examination. Kelly and others also assessed their interpersonal relationship and used the polygraph to understand the lying situation of the volunteers in the comparison group, and to be as good as possible about the number of lies and general lies.
Less lie and favorable physiological results show that the physical health and mental health of volunteers with less lying have improved. For example, when the volunteers in the comparison group seldom said three goodwill lies, they reported less than one physiological condition such as headache and sore throat.Less reports of two psychological conditions such as depression, tension and so on.
This positive effect is more apparent in the honest group volunteers.
In addition, volunteers who reduce lying behavior believe that their interpersonal relationships have improved.
Researchers believe that this is the main reason why volunteers become healthier.
Kelly said: “When they lie, their health level declines; when they lie, their health improves.
At the end of the experiment, the honest group volunteers also reported how they tried to avoid lying in their interpersonal relationships.
Kelly said: “We found that experimental participants can consciously and dramatically reduce daily lie.
In turn, it is associated with significant improvements in health.
“Dew stuffing” shows that when people are lying, they will involuntarily appear physiological changes such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration and sweat secretion caused by sympathetic nerves.
In addition, studies have shown that when speaking the truth and telling lies, the brain has different areas of activity. In general, the area of activity that the brain needs to mobilize when lying is more than the truth, and it takes more effort.
American researchers have previously used brain scanning techniques to find that when lying, brain activity is concentrated in the middle, lower, middle anterior, hippocampus, middle tip, brain marginal area, etc. These areas are human brain and consciousness, perception, inhibition, and other areas of emotional response.
When telling the truth, only the area of the prefrontal lobe, the upper leaf and the cerebral gyrus with the striate are active.
British researchers have found that facial expressions and skin blood flow unconsciously and uncontrollably change when people experience emotional changes.
Eye movements, pupil dilation, pouting, frowning, panting, swallowing, blinking, and even perivascular vascular congestion can 鈥渟ell鈥?mental activity.
